Being a Second Photographer

As a second photographer for Julie Harris, occasionally she will be off photographing the bride and groom while I am left covering the cocktail hour or guests milling about until the ceremony starts. It is pretty standard for a second photographer to have to shoot details, and photograph the wedding guests. When I first started working with Julie I noticed that she would see an interesting looking person and get right in there face and make this great looking portrait. This season I challenged myself to do the same, walk right up to someone who has a unique look and make their portrait, for the most part the subject is a parent or grandparent, I look for wrinkles, or eye color, something that makes the person stand out. My Roommates

I’ve been meaning to do this for a while…so yesterday I decided to make portraits of my roommates. Using a my 4×5 Speed Graphic Camera I set up the camera on a tripod and photographed the image that was on the back of the ground glass on the 4×5 camera using my digital SLR and macro lens. I’m pretty happy with the results.

Robert Frank

Beginning this year I started buying a photo book every month. The first book I purchased was “The Americans” by Robert Frank. I love looking at this book, it is the quintessential book to reference to when editing and sequencing images. The way Frank makes transitions from one image to the next is inspiring. I think about Frank’s book anytime I am trying to edit for an album or slideshow. It is a must own for any photo book collector.

Lately for these kind of week in review blog posts I have been trying to go out and shoot something specific, climbing, the zoo, vail closing day. Something with people, some sort of cohesive body of images that fit together. This week I just didn’t have any time. I was stressed out, and overwhelmed. Lots of decisions are being made regarding Preston Utley Photography , and any wrong decision could prove to be fatal to the business. I want this to work, I want to be successful, not because I love money, but because I love photography…but I digress. The following photos were made through out the week, and they are most certainly random…

While working on my computer on Monday I noticed the rain had stopped for a minute and the sun came out, so I couldn’t resist stepping out and making a photo…

On Tuesday I stopped by my Mom’s work because she needed a headshot…

On Wednesday I didn’t make a single picture…

On Thursday I saw Juno sitting in some nice light…

On Friday I didn’t make a single frame…

On Saturday I shot a wedding with Julie Harris…stay tuned later in the week for those pictures…

On Sunday I made another photo of Juno…

All and all not an exciting week visually, but there is always next week…

This weekend was my friend Shane’s bachelor party. I, being the best man was required to plan something. I’m not a stripper guy, neither is Shane. So instead of putting us through something we wouldn’t enjoy. I decided a road trip to Moab was appropriate. A few years ago I met Scott Smith of Apex Mountain School, a guiding service in Vail. Over the years I have been helping him get some photos for his website in exchange he has taught me how to climb and this past weekend Scott drove all the way to Moab to teach my friends how to climb. It was a great experience to share with some really good friends. As you look at these photos your probably asking where all the photos of us climbing are, well I kinda forgot to shoot during the climbing. I was just having too much fun enjoying the company of friends and watching and cheering them on as they did something they had never done before.
